We decided to redesign the ZDFheute news app because it has a number of problems, particularly in terms of navigation and intuitive understanding. These problems arise from the variety of functions the app contains.
Our intention is to inform all age groups about interesting events.
Understand
To get a complete overview of the functions, we started with a screenflow. With the help of the screenflow, we were also able to identify where the fundamental problems of the app lie.
To figure out how users of different ages interact with the app and what problems they encounter, we carried out two user tests.
After the tests, we created two user profiles for different age groups. These helped us to recognise requirements and frustrations and translate them into user needs.
Explore
Using the Design Studio method, we were able to generate a lot of ideas and solutions. We focused on the delight feature. We then created the first prototypes with wireframes and tested them again.
Materialize
For the visual design, we took the current colours of the ZDFheute news app and used them in a different way. For the icons, we focused on simplicity and clarity, so we opted for outline icons. We used this style guide to design all our screens.
